One day of average payment time ties up one day of revenue in the debtor ledger. At 50m kr. in annual revenue, that is 137,000 kr. sitting with your customers instead of in the bank. Bring payment time down from 60 to 45 days and just over 2m kr. is released. It is not income — it is capital you have already earned, and it comes home once and stays home. The arithmetic does not depend on how good you are at selling. It depends on when you send the reminder.

The compensation fee of 310 kr. can be charged per overdue claim between businesses — on top of the reminder fees, and without having to be agreed in advance. On a single invoice the amount is immaterial. On 200 overdue invoices a year it is 62,000 kr. that nobody has asked for. The fee must not be charged to consumers. That is the mistake that costs more than the fee brings in.

A monetary claim becomes time-barred after three years as a rule. Up to the day before, it is fully valid — and the day after, it is worth nothing. The paper decides the lifespan. The same claim lives three years on an invoice and ten years once it has been established by judgment or court settlement. Limitation is not interrupted by your reminders. It is interrupted when the debtor acknowledges the debt, or when you take legal steps. A folder full of reminders is not an interruption.

A debtor who does not pay has usually not forgotten the invoice. He has moved it down the list. A friendlier turn of phrase does not change that priority. The real function of the reminder process is to build the foundation the case will be run on — and to do it before anyone knows there is going to be a case. So write the reminder for the person who will read it nine months from now: the bailiff. It will solve its original purpose along the way.

The threshold at 100,000 kr.

The payment order (betalingspåkrav) — the simplified debt collection procedure — can be used for claims up to 100,000 kr. and produces an enforceable instrument without a full lawsuit. Above the threshold, the claim has to be brought as an ordinary civil action by way of a writ of summons. It is no harder. It simply requires a lawyer. That is the point at which a collection provider without lawyers of its own has to hand the case on — and where your largest claims become somebody else's.

A credit policy is not a document. It is a limit somebody has to dare to enforce

A credit policy that applies only to the small customers is not a credit policy. It is a sorting rule. The most expensive debtor in any receivables ledger is the one nobody dares to stop supplying. He knows it perfectly well. The policy therefore has to say WHO decides — not only what the limit is. A limit without an owner is never enforced.

RieckFlow pulls overdue invoices directly from your accounting system. The reminder sequence starts on the due date, without anyone having to export anything. Payments that land in the accounting system close the case automatically. A debtor who has paid does not receive a reminder. It removes the most expensive delay in the whole collection process — the days that pass between a claim falling due and somebody getting round to acting on it.
